I come from a very traditional Germanic philology department. I entered it dreaming of a lifetime among medieval manuscripts – but one day, a memo sloppily tacked onto a glass cabinet with endless rows of musty books threw me off that path: the very first lecture on Corpus Linguistics and text search demo! Since then, I have been captivated by the power of linguistic annotation and query languages. They have even  inspired me to learn some statistics and coding. I wish to make this event an interesting (and useful) start for you, too!

With a background in computational linguistics, I have been involved in many corpus projects, and over the course of time have developed the TEITOK environment, which is intended to allow linguists to build, maintain, and improve their own corpus without the need for extensive computational skills. Modern corpora can contain much more information than just text, and the development of the environment is a constant attempt to see how all this information can best be made available.

Building, editing, annotating, and querying text corpora, as well as maintaining, customization and development of corpus tools, is our daily business at the Institute of the Czech National Corpus – and so is research! Here are some of our research questions: Do texts translated to Czech differ from original Czech texts? What style registers are there in Czech and do they correspond to what we have learned about genres and styles? What is typical of academic Czech? What are the most typical words (keywords) of a given text or a period of time? How does language evolve in time? How do speakers demonstrate power? Michal, a mathematician by background, did his Ph.D. in linguistics. Václav is a linguist and phonetician, fluent in related statistics and computing. We both have matured along with the Institute of the Czech National Corpus to serve our turns as department heads, and we both have been teaching corpus linguistics and basic linguistic programming to humanities students for many years.

Most frequent questions and answers

When attending the physical workshops a computer will be provided for you, but a personal device can be useful.

Corpus building is an integral part of this workshop. Therefore, we ask you to bring a few text files of your own interest for your individual hands-on experience with building a corpus. These files do not necessarily have to be in English.

To visit the city of Prague, CLS INFRA cannot supply travel, childcare, or accommodation grants. However, the three days training can be attended free of charge – and lunch is included.
 

This is an elementary course for actual beginners. If you have any NLP/programming skills,  if you have ever built your own corpus or queried one beyond looking for a single word, or if you are well-versed in XML-TEI, this course would be too slow for you.

Our teachers have years of experience in teaching newcomers to the trade and will gladly guide you in making the most of the training. If you do have prior experience with the skills offered in this training school, you might still have fun scrolling through the teaching materials or apply for a fellowship to pursue your individual research or teaching project with the on-site support by our CLS INFRA project partners.

Due to the personalized and tailor-made nature of this workshop, there will be no public live-stream of the sessions. However, DARIAH campus platform will host training materials and recordings of plenary sessions post-event. Stay tuned for more!

NB: When signing up for the training school, you give permission to being recorded.

Lunch on all three training days is included, free of charge. There is going to be a buffet meal consisting of three warm dishes, one vegetarian and one gluten free, a salad bar and a selection of cold snacks.
