Dictionary Building for Narrative Arc
Narratives are fundamental to human communication, providing frameworks for conveying meaning and shared perspectives. Understanding the structure and progression of narratives is crucial in various fields, including literary studies and computational analysis. This project proposes a comprehensive approach to automatically identify and analyse narrative progression in novels using a lexical-semantic based method. While existing approaches, such as hand-curated dictionaries to identify narrative arc, offer valuable insights, they often lack comprehensive coverage and fail to encompass all semantic aspects. By leveraging automated text analysis and computational tools, this project aims to develop a novel dictionary specifically focused on narrative arc elements, including staging, plot progression, and resolution. The project’s innovative approach holds promise for quantifying narrative structure across diverse texts, contributing to the advancement of computational literary studies and enabling a deeper understanding of storytelling dynamics.
